Vintage & classic bike repair and restoration
We love nothing more than rescuing a worn out or neglected vintage or classic bike and restoring it to its former glory!

Our vintage and classic bike repair services include:

  • General repairs
  • Overhaul and full re-builds
  • Modifications
  • Re-spray of frame or forks
  • Sourcing hard to find parts.

Wherever possible we use new parts which maintain the original character of the bike.

Some of our customers will however want to change the riding position and other features to make the bike more comfortable or suitable for their purposes - changing from drop bars to a more upright style is a good example of this, and something we are very happy to do.

VINTAGE Raleigh chopper REBUILD

The most Iconic kid's bike on the planet: The Raleigh Chopper.
Had this one dropped off at Hix Cycles for renovation.

Needs a strip down for complete respray and re-chrome plating.

Here are some photos from the very beginning of this project.

And here is the finished project!

With mostly original parts, such as the wheel rim, hub shell, brake caliper, mudguard and chainset all having been re-chrome plated back to its new beginning.

The wheels have been trued and the bike has been re assembled taking care not to chip at that amazing paintwork.

Even the original chain and sprocket have been cleaned and reused.

Triumph Palm beach restoration

Here we have a light blue triumph palm beach bike to restore.

It started off with big patches of rust, dents and scratches.

Here it is from the start.

Photos from the paint job are shown here.

The paint was stripped down to the frame and then re-coated to include the original stickers and decals.

1965 Triumph Palm Beach ladies bicycle has been completed for our very happy customer!

Our latest restoration on behalf of our customer. No effort spared in bringing this beautiful bike back to its original new condition.

Some parts re-chrome plated. Other parts painstakingly sourced through our cycle trade network.
See attached pictures of the complete rebuild here.

In case anyone wonders, we didn't forget to change the seat or put pedals on! The customer is putting these on himself.

1955 Sturmey Archer 4 Speed Hub Rebuild

Picture

Recently rebuilt this 1955 Sturmey Archer FW 4 speed hub into this Raleigh stainless steel rim.
All set up on the customer's bike and yes, it works perfectly.
All 4 gears select and run smoothly.  Great feeling to get one of these old British 4 speeds up and running again.

Back in the late 40's and 50's the 4 speed hub was very popular with club cyclists.

Raleigh (1937) Gents Tourist

Older than a Spitfire here is the Raleigh 1937 Gents Tourist we've just finished repairing.

One of the oldest bikes we've worked on recently, it’s in remarkable original condition.

The first photo shows the bike as received from its owner who brought it from Liverpool.

With these earlier encased chain models, fixing a puncture or changing the rear tyre was something of a challenge for most people!

Stripping down and giving the bike a good clean and degrease was our first task.

We've serviced the 3 speed hub and rebuilt the rear wheel with stainless steel spokes and using the original Westwood rim.

Some parts of the chain guard assembly were bent or damaged and we had to carefully clean and straighten them so it would all fit back together correctly)

With a drop of cycle oil and a bit of adjustment the original Sturmey Archer gear lever and cable from 1937 were operating smoothly with all 3 gears selecting perfectly.

With the new Schwalbe Delta Cruiser Plus tyres fitted, hopefully the wheels won't need to come off again any time soon.

Raleigh military bike (1940s)
1940's Raleigh we've just restored for a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment. Believed to have been a military bike, you can see it has a much wider chain than the standard 1/8 chain usually seen on three speed gear bicycles.

Many original parts have been re-chrome plated including the unique heavy duty chainwheel and front hub. We've rebuilt both wheels with new rims and spokes and overhauled the Sturmey Archer 3 speed.  We're particularly pleased with the refurbishment of the original crossbar-mounted Sturmey Archer 3 speed gear lever.

Triumph (1980s)
  • Re-built rear wheel using original hub with new alloy rim and spokes
  • Brand new 6 speed 14-24 freewheel and silver chain
  • Replaced brake shoes and re-taped bars
Raleigh Boulevard Tourist (1960)
Fully re-built apart from bottom bracket, including:
  • Re-conditioned Sturmey Archer 3 speed and dynamo hub
  • Re-built with Weinmann alloy rim and matching front wheel
  • Replaced all-rounder bars and new dynamo headlamp

Carlton International (mid-1950s)
Raleigh Superbe (1983)
  • Replaced wheels with 700C alloy wheels
  • Replaced bottom bracket axle and headset
  • New rear mech and chain
  • All new cables
  • Rebuilt wheels with new stainless rims and spokes
  • Cleaned chrome and paintwork
  • Overhauled rod brakes
  • Replaced other rusted parts

Raleigh Corsa (c1987)
  • Replaced wheels
  • Thoroughly cleaned rest of bike
  • Set up with all new cables
  • Replaced seat to match original
BSA Sportsman (c1965)
  • Converted from drop to straight handlebars
  • Replace bottom bracket headset
  • Complete new drivetrain: chainset, derailleur and freewheel
  • Cleaned up brakes, new seat and all new cables
