Sun tandem pictured here as it was when it first arrived
And here, after a massive amount of work, is the same bike complete apart from the seats, stoker bars and rear mudguard.
The frame and forks have been professionally resprayed including all original decals and head badge with thanks to Keith Warrington of Peterborough.
The hubs, chainsets and a few other parts were rechrome plated.
The rear bottom bracket shell has been reamed out and a sleeve fitted to accommodate a standard quarter inch bottom bracket.

Modern gears have been used as the old parts were beyond use.
I have rebuilt both wheels with the original hubs using vintage stainless steel Raleigh rims and new stainless steel gauge 14 spokes with 16mm brass nipples.
The original rear pedal brake has been refurbished with a new custom made pivot, cable routing and anchor. These and many other custom parts have been designed and made in our workshop. Thanks to comments from David Tudor and John Hancock we believe the frame to go been manufactured between 1950 and 1953. This is based upon it bearing the last Birmingham head badge used by Sun.

I have an earlier model, double gents with the diamond shaped brass badge on the headset. I bought it in 1964 for £5.00. I haven't ridden it since about 1980, and now my grandson is 11 I have decided to 'get him dirty'! We have stripped it and are in the process of removing the paint. As yet I haven't found a frame number. It has the same brakes as the one you have and the heel pedal. I changed the gears to Huret Alvit from the Benelux which were on when I bought it. In those days I raced, riding a Reg Harris Giro d'Italia and built my own bikes and wheels. I had rebuilt the tandem wheels in about 1970, but now they need re-chroming and new rims. I no longer have my jigs etc for building the wheels. What would your charges be? I can strip them and possibly have the hubs chromed first. The rear wheel has a long thread for the freewheel hub and the one I used to use was a Benelux type B. Are these available? Gears and sprockets 3/32.

Looks more like 1950-53 model as it has the later head badge.

I would agree with Johns dating. The badge was the last Birmingham badge used by Sun. You have a big job on there as the bike is missing some key components but it will be well worth it. I am just close to finishing my 5th Sun of that period. David
